Breastfeeding without birthing. Adoptive breastfeeding. Induced lactation. There are many ways to describe the process of nursing an adopted baby.
Why do moms choose to breastfeed adopted babies? Over the last few months, I have been working with a mom who chose this, and it has been a beautiful process to watch!
1. Skin to skin - One reason to nurse an adopted baby is that the daily skin-to-skin with baby has so so many benefits for both moms and babies. Many people know of skin-to-skin or kangaroo care for babies right after birth or while babies are in the NICU, but it's beneficial as babies grow as well!
2. Human milk has many benefits! Even if adopting moms don't obtain a full milk supply, the milk they can provide their babies is priceless!
3. The always wanted to nurse their child. If a couple can not have biological children for some reason, they may still want as many of the experiences as biological parents, including how they feed their baby!
4. Each person is different and may have different reasons to want to nurse their baby.
Are you considering adoptive breastfeeding? Contact me if you're in the Indianapolis area and want someone to help you through the process!
